NHL Depth Charts: How to Use Them for Fantasy Hockey

NHL depth charts show you where each player sits in a team's organizational hierarchy. For fantasy hockey, that means understanding who's on the first line, who's on the power play, and who's next in line if someone gets hurt.

What Is an NHL Depth Chart?

A depth chart ranks players by position and role:

  • Forwards – Centers, left wings, right wings, often grouped by line (L1, L2, L3, L4)
  • Defensemen – Pairings (D1, D2, D3) and power play usage
  • Goalies – Starter vs. backup

Unlike a simple roster, a depth chart reflects deployment—who the coach trusts in key situations.

Why Depth Charts Matter for Fantasy

  1. Line combinations – First-line players get more ice time and better linemates
  2. Power play units – PP1 quarterbacks and net-front players score more
  3. Injury replacements – When a top-line winger is out, someone moves up. The depth chart shows who.

Where to Find NHL Depth Charts

Center Ice Hub provides depth charts for all 32 NHL teams. Visit our Team Lineups page and select any team. Each team page has two views:

  • Daily Lineup – Current line combinations for today's game
  • Depth Chart – Organizational hierarchy (centers, wings, defense, goalies)

We update lineups hourly and depth charts as rosters change. Use them to spot deployment changes before your league mates.

How to Use Depth Charts for Waiver Wire and Trades

  • Promotion – A player moving from L3 to L1 gets a usage bump. Check our lineup pages for recent changes.
  • Power play role – A defenseman joining PP1 is a huge value add. Our depth charts show PP units.
  • Goalie tandems – Know who's the 1A vs. 1B. Our Starting Goalies page tracks confirmations.

Pair With Player Stats

Depth charts tell you where a player plays. Player stats tell you how they're performing. Combine both for waiver wire adds and trade targets.
