Post-Freeze Predictions: 3 Blockbuster Trades We Expect on March 6

The NHL is currently under a strict Olympic Trade Freeze. From February 4 until February 22, no trades are allowed. This gives General Managers three weeks to sit in their offices, look at their rosters, and realize they need to make a move.

Once the freeze lifts, expect a frenzy leading up to the March 6 Trade Deadline. Here are three blockbuster predictions that could redefine the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

1. Juuse Saros to the New Jersey Devils

The Devils have the skaters, the system, and the cap space, but they still lack a "shutdown" goaltender for a seven-game series. Nashville is hovering on the playoff bubble, and with Saros approaching UFA status, the Predators might finally pull the trigger on a rebuild.

  • The Price: A 1st round pick + a top-tier prospect (think Seamus Casey).
  • Impact: New Jersey immediately becomes the favorite in the Metropolitan Division.

2. Jakob Chychrun to the Toronto Maple Leafs

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before, but the Leafs need defensive help. Specifically, a puck-moving lefty who can eat 22 minutes a night. Chychrun has been a bright spot in a tough season for his current club, and his contract is manageable for a contender.

  • The Price: Easton Cowan + 2026 1st Round Pick.
  • Impact: Toronto finally gets the blueline stability needed to support Matthews and Marner in the post-season.

3. Trevor Zegras to the Chicago Blackhawks

The "Market for Zegras" has been simmering for two years. A move to Chicago to play alongside Connor Bedard would be a marketing dream and a hockey reality. Zegras needs a fresh start, and the Blackhawks need elite talent to complement their young core.

  • The Price: Two 2nd round picks + a roster player.
  • Impact: The most exciting young duo in the league is formed, accelerating Chicago's rebuild by two years.

Why the Delay?

The Olympic Break acts as a scouting showcase. GMs are watching their targets play against the best in the world in Milan. A dominant performance by a defenseman for Sweden or a forward for Canada could add an extra draft pick to their asking price.

Fantasy Impact

If you own any of these players, be prepared for a value swing. A trade to a contender usually helps scoring stats but might hurt power-play time if the new team is already loaded. Keep an eye on our Fantasy Strategy Guide for updates.
