The "Banger" League Blueprint: Hits and Blocks Leaders to Target for Your Fantasy Playoffs
In standard fantasy hockey leagues, scoring is king. But in "Banger" leagues—where Hits, Blocks, and Penalty Minutes (PIM) are weighted heavily—the value of a player changes completely.
As we navigate the Olympic Break, it’s time to look at the specialists who can win you a championship in March. These aren't the guys who make the Hart Trophy shortlist, but they are the ones who fill the stat sheet.
The Hit Kings
1. Radko Gudas (Anaheim Ducks)
Gudas remains the gold standard for physical play. He is currently leading the league in hits per 60 minutes. If your team is soft, Gudas is the ultimate fix. He is also a sneaky source of blocks.
2. Jeremy Lauzon (Nashville Predators)
Lauzon is a "Banger League" cheat code. He consistently puts up 5+ hits a night. While he won't provide much offense, his floor in physical categories is higher than almost anyone else in the league.
The Block Specialists
1. Chris Tanev (Toronto Maple Leafs)
Tanev is a human shield. He leads the league in blocked shots and plays a ton of shorthanded minutes. In leagues that reward defensive reliability, Tanev is a top-tier asset.
2. Alec Martinez (Chicago Blackhawks)
The veteran still knows how to get in the way of a puck. While his health is always a concern (check our Injury Stash Guide), when he’s on the ice, he’s a blocking machine.
The "Unicorns" (Hits + Blocks + Points)
1. Rasmus Dahlin (Buffalo Sabres)
Dahlin has evolved into a physical force. He is one of the few players in the league who can give you 20 goals, 60 points, 150 hits, and 150 blocks. He is the #1 overall asset in most banger formats.
2. Matthew Tkachuk (Florida Panthers)
Tkachuk provides the rare combination of elite scoring and high-volume hitting. He is the heart of the Panthers' system and a fantasy monster. Watch for him to carry this physical play into the Olympics.
Strategy for the Final Stretch
- Balance Your Roster: Don't chase hits at the expense of all your scoring. You need a 70/30 split to remain competitive in all categories.
- Stream the Schedule: Look for teams playing 4 games in a week during your playoffs. A "banger" playing 4 games will always outproduce a star playing 2.
- Watch the Trade Deadline: If a physical defenseman gets traded to a contender, his blocks might go up as his team spends more time defending leads. Check our Trade Predictions.
